The 2017 BusinessNZ & Southern Cross Health Society Wellness in the Workplace Survey report shows:

  • Around 6.6 million days were lost to absence in 2016.

  • 4.5 – 5 days annually is the average rate of absence per employee.

  • Average absence levels are consistently higher for public sector workers who, on average, are away 2-2.5 days more than private sector workers.

  • The most prevalent cause of absence for both manual and non-manual employees is minor illnesses, although non-manual occupations show higher absences for illness than manual occupations.​


  • General workload and coworker and customer relationships creates the most stress/anxiety. Issues around ‘family relationships’ are also important, but more so for those with fewer than 50 staff.

  • A typical employee’s absence costs their employer $600 to $1,000 a year.

  • Reducing levels of harmful stress involves a combination of factors. If net stress levels continue to show a sizeable increase year on year, then any actions will struggle to improve matters.

  • 4 out of 5 businesses do not have policies or arrangements in place for older workers, despite over 40% expecting an increase in workers above 65 in their enterprise in the near future.

  • Only one-fifth of enterprises take a formal approach to gathering non-work related data.  Even when data is collected, most are not proactive in terms of using that information to improve the wellbeing of staff.​  However, around nine out of ten enterprises believe wellness has at least some impact on the productivity of staff.

  • Health issues, work and lifestyle choices have an impact on staff wellbeing and performance at work.  Given the increasing trend to recognise ‘work/life balance’, both work and non work life needs to be holistically looked at.
