Integrated Wellness Solutions for Creating & Sustaining
a Healthy, Engaged & Productive Workforce
The cost of ill health in the workplace is high and is rapidly becoming an issue that employers can no longer afford to ignore.
Wellbeing programs are more than a perk, as many companies now regard them as an effective way to address absenteeism, presenteeism (reduced performance and productivity due to ill health while at work) and attrition, in order to increase productivity.
The 2019 BusinessNZ & Southern Cross Health Society Wellness in the Workplace Survey report shows:
-
Around 7.4 million working days were lost to absence in 2018. Up from 6.6 in 2016.
-
Absence remains higher among employees in large enterprises.
Manual : Private sector 4.7 - Public sector 7.6
Non-Manual : Private sector 3.8 - Public sector 6.1
-
Minor illness remains the dominant cause of absence for personal reasons, with injury significantly less so.
-
Mental wellbeing/stress was added as a new category showing an increased proportion of absence that is due to both work and non-work related anxiety/stress/ depression. The 2019 survey shows stress has risen by a net 23.5% across business in the past 2 years.
-
Employee assistance (wellness) programmes dominate the approach to supporting the mental wellbeing of staff.
-
General workload remains the biggest issue for businesses of all sizes, although relationships at work are also a key factor for smaller firms.
-
Cost of Absence : 4 years worth of data suggests just 1 employee costs their employer $600 to $1,000 a year.
-
Productivity : On a scale of 1-5 where 1 = almost no effect and 5 = significant impact, all businesses by size showed wellness impacts on the productivity of staff.
-
Health issues, work and lifestyle choices have an impact on staff wellbeing and performance at work. Given the increasing trend to recognise ‘work/life balance’, both work and non work life needs to be holistically looked at.
